Torbay Cottage Resort Spring and Fall

Some folk call this
the 'Off' season,
but we like to think that
Spring and Fall are the
best seasons at Torbay.

Our Sunsets remain the most spectacular in the Near North.  While excellent anytime of the year, the spring and fall seem to offer the most vibrant colours of all seasons.

Spring fishing can be one of the greatest experiences the Near North has to offer.

Fishing at Torbay is best in the spring and early summer when the pickerel (walleye) are in shallower water and close to shore.

As spring turns into summer you can fish with success for bass over at 2nd Rocky Point, a spot you can walk, row or canoe to, or you may power up a rented aluminum with 20HP outboard and head for several local fishing hot spots.

Lake Nipissing, with an average water depth of only 15 feet (4.5m) is renowned for its Pickerel (Walleye). The shallow depth and significant fetch (stretches of open water) allow for excellent oxygenation of the water as wind and wave action combine to bring oxygen to the lake bottom. Some of the creatures living there are the infamous Shadfly, Dragonfly, Mussel, Snails, Leeches, Crustaceans, Fish Fly, and more. These bottom dwellers are the food for many of our fish.

Maximum Lake depth is near 170 ft (50m) toward the French River, and aside from Walleye, other major angling species are Bass (large & small mouth & Rock Bass), Perch (yellow), Pike (northern), & Musky (muskellunge)!

You will also find lake Whitefish, Cisco (lake Herring), and in some areas Lake Sturgeon. In fact, there are over 40fishclean2.JPG (13866 bytes) species of fish to be found in Lake Nipissing.

We support the finest bait supplier in town - Billy Bob's also happens to be close to Torbay...

Lake Nipissing has a physical size of about 550 sq. km. (330 sq. mi.). Water temperature peaks near 24 C (75 F) at a depth of 1 m (3 ft) by late summer. Freezing of the lake begins in October or November with the lake frozen over sometime in December. The ice thickness varies and is generally not safe to travel on until after Christmas or later. Ice thickness will reach over 1 m (3 ft) by late February. Spring breakup occurs in April with the lake ice free between early April and late May. Average Ice Free date is April 26. 1998 Spring breakup is expected to be earlier than usual so anticipate a clear lake prior to the average date above.

We now have a small dock to serve as a place to relax and sit or wine and dine...

We advocate letting the big ones go...Most Pickerel over 48cm (18 in) are reproducing females that are carrying over 60,000 eggs. Please also bring your litter home - if left in the lake it pollutes the life support system of all fish by contaminating the ecosystem consisting of water, plants which produce oxygen, and bottom dwellers that serve as food.

Fall is in a league of its own at Torbay, certainly a special time here with leaves changing, the aroma of fall and the truly gorgeous sunsets along with the peace and quiet... take a hike through the Education Centre Trails or along the beach or check out the Discovery Trails for walking, hiking or even (mountain) biking. This is the season of long, golden days, a time of quiet reflection, - just right to enjoy an un-crowded vacation experience.

Fall is the best time to take part in the local area Artisan Studio Tours.
Have a close look at fine art, crafts and antiques in Nipissing South,
Almaguin North, and the Forgotten Trails area.

Please see our 'Links' page for more information.

If you are looking for peace and relaxation this is the time that offers just that! Children are back in school and the beach is all yours. Sometimes we offer special rates during these seasons so you may wish to call us for more information.

Fall is the best time for visiting
the Eau Claire Gorge.
The wooded area provides a
great network of marked hiking trails.

Fall is a great time for this 330 km perimeter tour of Lake Nipissing. On the tour you will find historic sites, interesting architecture, tiny country churches, and the largest hardwood forest outside Russia.

When the leaves are falling and the air smells so fresh along the water's edge...
